Whilst hypnosis has been shown to be an effective tool in dealing with a myriad of medical and psychological conditions, it may require several or more sessions to achieve best results. Indeed, like any other form of therapy, including medical and surgical procedures, the results will vary from one individual to another but frequently hypnotherapy brings about a rapid response, not found in other forms of psychotherapy.

Hypnotherapy is usually conducted one on one in a private confidential session, and is also available to corporate and other groups for relaxation or motivational work etc.

Hypnotherapy has applications for almost any condition and listed below are examples of some of the more common issues.

Contrary to popular belief, smoking is rarely, if ever, addictive in nature, but rather, an acquired self-taught and self-programmed habitual behaviour.

Most smokers will probably be aware, that hypnosis is sometimes used to help those wishing to quit smoking. However, it’s lesswell recognised, that smokers were in a subtle, but nonetheless very real sense, hypnotised into taking up tobacco smoking in the first place.

Think about it, logically, does anyone really enjoy their first experiences of smoking? Simply put, new smokers must overcome their own critical thinking and natural physiological objections(think coughing, nausea, congested sinuses and light headedness etc.) to allow themselves to continue inhaling unpleasant tasting, noxious smelling and highly toxic vapors every time they light up.

The ‘smoker in waiting’ will have been entranced (read hypnotised) by the example and influence of their peers, who seemingly looked “cool” or perhaps “suave, mature and sophisticated” puffing on cigarettes. Perhaps, they were persuaded to “indulge” just to “fit in” and make them one of the gang? Maybe, the fledgling smoker was erroneously programmed to believe that inhaling toxic cancer inducing fumes deep into their lungs would help them relax and relieve the stress of the day.

If YOU’RE DETERMINED TO STOP SMOKING, so are we; which is why it makes perfect sense to utilise the power of your own mind through hypnosis to achieve your goal.

Weight Management

Many people have experienced the effects of unwanted weight gain and the ensuing struggles to lose the extra kilo’s.

Unfortunately, there are some who have the misfortune to suffer metabolic or physiological disorders leading to unwelcome weight gain, over which they have little control; whilst the rest of us gain weight in response to emotional circumstances in our lives i.e. being bullied, bereaved, divorced or other stressful event which lead us to seek comfort in food upon which we ascribe the misplaced belief that it will make us feel better, which it may well do, but only fleetingly.

Most people know that, excess weight carries significant health and other risks; some as obvious as clothes no longer fitting, reduction in physical mobility and energy levels etc. However, the less well-known side effects of over indulging, include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, loss of cognitive function, diminution of sexual function etc. It’s also believed that obesity plays a part in the advancement of Alzheimer’s disease.

At Smart Thinking we recognise that to successfully lose weight it is first necessary to address,(within the first session or so)any of the residual negative emotions underpinning the unhelpful relationship with food.

As part of our approach to weight loss we frequently employ a powerful and effective Virtual Gastric Banding hypnosis technique by which to convince the subconscious mind that the body has actually undergone a real procedure. This has the advantage of avoiding any of the risks associated with general an aesthesia, surgery or any of the intro and postoperative complications and at a fraction of the time and costs normally incurred in undergoing a physical procedure.

Stress and Anxiety

Can’t live with it but can’t live without it either.

Stress and anxiety are a necessary part of our ability to function on a day to day basis. A little bit of stress or angst at the right moment and at the right level, can be just what we need to give that certain edge to spur us onto better and greater achievements in our lives.

However, problems can start to build up when we unwittingly misread or mismatch an event or situation prompting the unconscious imagination to respond inappropriately to the circumstances by initiating a primordial fight, flight or freeze signal to the body. The unconscious mind is finely attuned to respond to threats and dangers, and fight, flight or freeze responses are entirely appropriate and necessary if we’re being stalked by a lion in the jungle, or there’s a large truck bearing down on us as we cross the highway. However, such reactions are not helpful whilst sitting on the 5:10pm train ride home or enjoying a cocktail with our friends.

Unwarranted anxiety signals can manifest as increased heart rate and breathing, sweating, inertia, feelings of nausea etc which in some subjects can be debilitating.

In hypnosis we talk directly to the seat of the imagination in the unconscious mind and reframe or interpret anew the initiating incident causing it to lose potency and its corresponding ability to trigger any unhelpful and unwanted responses.
